In addition to the specialized tools and equipment firefighters train with, a basic fire extinguisher is a viable option to combat a small fire before it gets out of control. As part of our weekly training session, our volunteers received a fire extinguisher refresher from Engineer Brian Adams, covering different types of fires we encounter and which extinguisher is the best choice. It is also important to know and understand the limitations of a fire extinguisher and what its capabilities are. After the review, our members participated in a live fire training led by Assistant Chief Doug Wilhelm to put their knowledge to work. We even got an opportunity to use a wet chemical extinguisher designed for use on kitchen fires involving large amounts of oil and grease.
