Fatal Crash in West Rockhill Twp.
Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 22:10 June 2 at 00:34 hours, Station 27 and Rescue 26 (Perkasie) were dispatched to the 100 block of Almont Rd. for the report of a one vehicle accident with two people trapped. The initial report from the communication center was that one vehicle had left the 309 bypass and crashed into a wooded area. Battalion 76 (Wedman) and Battalion 27 (McDonald) arrived to find one vehicle partially suspended in a group of trees. Battalion 27 established “Rockhill Command”, and assigned the crew from Engine 27-1 to set up scene lighting and prepare for rescue operations.
The crews from Station 27 and 26 were faced with an extremely difficult extrication due to the location of the accident, accessibility to the vehicle, and severity of entanglement/entrapment of the patients. Rescue 18 (West End) was added upon the arrival of Rescue 26, for additional rescue equipment and manpower. Engine 27 was staged at the James Memorial Park on Ridge Rd., to set up two landing zones for the injured occupants. Two additional rescue trucks were added by command over the course of the two hour extrication. This brought Montgomery Squad 72 (Tylersport) and 75 (Telford) to the scene. The crews from all companies worked relentlessly to remove the patients from the car.
The passenger of the vehicle was finally removed from the vehicle and flown to Abington Memorial Hospital at 02:30 hours. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, the driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Bucks County Coroners Office.
The initial companies remained on scene to assist with the vehicle recovery until 05:15 hours.
